As the 2022 year comes to an end, we would like to summarize GiKaD's accomplishments in the past year and send our sincere thanks to our sponsors.
To support students who have dreams for further education, GiKaD has established the Greenleaves 500+ (GL500+) program. The scholarships in this program will bear the sponsor's name and be funded for a minimum period of 3 years with an amount of at least USD 500/year. The amount of the scholarship funding can be adjusted from year to year depending on the sponsor.
In the school year 2022-2023, 19 students received the GL500+ scholarship.
Currently, in Saigon, English is being taught as a second language from first grade, emphasizing learning vocabulary and grammar. However, conversation and Question/Answer interview training are not being paid much attention to. Most students have to take private lessons at foreign language centers to improve all four skills of learning English: listening, speaking, reading, and writing since they are part of the requirements for university entrance exams.
Due to their family's difficult circumstances, in addition to the lack of money for private lessons, those students are also living in the suburbs. They do not have the means to go to foreign language centers. Although the PC4Kids program has given the students desktop and laptop computers to facilitate their English self-learning, their level is quite low and not much improvements have been made.
Mrs. Lily Nguyen, a Vietnamese-Australian English teacher in Saigon, and Miss Quynh Anh Nguyen have volunteered to tutor these children at no fees.
In 2022, GiKad distributed further Corona emergency aid of 500,000 VND (20€) each to 98 needy children as support for their livelihood.
Since some students did not have the opportunity to take part in online lessons, 4 children received support to buy mobile phones for homeschooling.
In 2022 we were able to handover 4 laptops to the following students:
1) Lê Thị Thùy Trang, 9th grader, Binh Hòa High School, district Củ
2) Phạm Hồ Bảo Long, 9th grader, Binh Hòa High School, district Củ Chi
3) Trần Thị Doanh Doanh, 9th grader, Võ Thành Trang High School, district Tân Phú
4) Võ Hữu Tín, 10th grader, Trần Phú High School, district Tân Phú
5) Phạm Minh Phượng, 12th grader, Bình Hưng Hòa High School, BìnhTân
The students of the EgoStom project continue quarterly to get stories to read and to to share their thoughts and observations as well as their own personal "lessons learned".
In addition to the EgoStom grants, they received awards of VND 200,000 each for the best essays.
In the school year 2021-2022 the Greenleaves program supports 97 students under 12th grade and one college student.
At the end of the 2021-2022 school year, many students received certificates of merit for being excellent students:
- 20 children have finished elementary school.
- 8 students passed the 10th grade exam.
- 3 have graduated from high school.
- Phạm Minh Phượng passed the entrance exam of the University Technology, Major in Business Administration.
- Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Giàu passed the entrance exam of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, major in Vietnam Studies.
The more joy we make other people, the more joy returns to our own hearts - this German proverb is also our motto Make the world a better place.
Please help us
in combating illiteracy among children from the poorest backgrounds in Vietnam.
At the end of the year we would like to thank you on behalf of the children for your support and wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
